Tucked away in the rugged landscapes of northern Portugal, Gerês is not only a natural gem but also a region steeped in history. The area has been inhabited since prehistoric times, with remnants of megalithic tombs and ancient settlements still visible in the hills. During Roman times, Gerês played a key role due to its strategic mountain paths — the Roman road “Via Nova” still cuts through the park, complete with mile markers and ruins.

Medieval villages like Lindoso and Soajo preserve the legacy of centuries-old traditions, with stone granaries and castles that echo tales of defense and rural life. Over time, Gerês became a place of spiritual retreat, where monasteries were built in harmony with nature.
